Do Men and Women Poop Differently?

  • 2 min read

There was a popular New York Times best-selling book in the '90s called Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, but does that relate to their bowel movements as well?

It turns out the answer is yes. Read on to learn more and of course how fiber can help everyone poop better.

Why Do Men and Women Poop Differently?

Yes, and it is because of anatomical differences. The GI tracks of men and women are different.

Women have wider pelvises than men, as well as extra internal organs (hello uterus and ovaries!). As a result, women's colons hang a bit lower than men's, and fun fact, are on average a little bit longer. By ten centimeters if we are counting and doctors aren't exactly sure why but believe it's related to childbearing.

Another difference is that women have less rigid abdominal walls than men, and it takes food takes longer to transit through the female body, which makes women more prone to bloating. (The more you know about bloating!)

The transit of stool can be more challenging for women than men.

What's a Normal Amount of Pooping Again for Anyone?

First, there is no set normal amount. All our bodies are beautiful and different. A poop a day doesn’t necessarily mean you are healthy. However, there might be an issue if you’re going less than three times a week or more than three times a day. (As always, you may want to consult your doctor.) Though we all may experience constipation or diarrhea occasionally, you might need a fix if you are experiencing these concerns consistently.

Constipation is more than just annoying. It is a real issue. Constipation causes about 2.5 million visits to healthcare providers each year in the United States. That’s way too many people who are full of it!

How Anyone Can Up Their Bowel Movement Frequency

There are a lot of myths out there about what can relieve constipation and help you poop more often. There are many factors that might affect how often you go #2 like your diet, your activity level, your fluid intake, hormonal changes, aging, and more.

But the most likely answer is that you probably lack enough fiber in your diet. You might think that fiber is only something older people need to worry about, but it’s essential to take care of your gut, too. Fiber is for ALL ages.
