How Often Should I Poop?

  • 2 min read

Pooping. It’s a topic that might make some people giggle, but let’s be real it’s an important indicator of your overall health.

We get this question a lot, "how often should you be going?" The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might think.

Read on fiber friends about how Bonny can help and as always if something feels off, don’t wait, chat with your doc.

What is Normal?

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. For most people, anywhere from three times a day to three times a week is considered normal (Cleveland Clinc). That’s a wide range! The key is consistency like most things, if your bathroom habits are steady and comfortable, you’re likely in good shape.

Factors That Influence Pooping Frequency

Your bowel movement schedule is a delicate dance, influenced by several key factors:

  • Diet: High-fiber foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains help keep things moving. (Bonny is of course an excellent way to boost your fiber intake!)

  • Hydration: Water is the MVP of digestion. Dehydration = cement bricks. Stay hydrated, folks.

  • Activity Level: Exercise stimulates digestion and promotes regularity (Mayo Clinic).

  • Stress: Anxiety and stress can disrupt digestion, leading to constipation or diarrhea. The gut-mind connection is important to remember.

  • Medications & Health Conditions: Certain medications and conditions, like IBS or hypothyroidism, can impact bowel habits (Harvard Health).

Signs of a Healthy Poop Schedule

While frequency varies, here are some signs that your bowel movements are healthy:

  • Easy to pass, with little to no straining (woohoo!).

  • Well-formed, not too hard, not too loose. Think Goldilocks, it's just right.

  • A brown color (though variations happen based on diet).

  • A schedule that’s relatively consistent for you.

When to Be Concerned

If you’re experiencing any of the following, it might be time to check in with a doctor:

  • Going less than three times a week and feeling bloated or uncomfortable

  • Straining excessively

  • Stools that are consistently hard, dry, or very loose

  • Persistent diarrhea or constipation

  • Blood in your stool (Johns Hopkins Medicine).
